The Oberlander Case

August 3, 2001

Dear Friends,
The unthinkable, the unimaginable has actually happened!  Mr. Oberlander's Canadian Citizenship has been revoked.  This revocation is based on a ruling by Judge Andrew MacKay, that on the balance of probabilities, the accused withheld the information that at age 17 he was used by invading German SS forces as an interpreter.  The Government did not supply any proof that Mr. Oberlander was even asked that question at his immigration interview.  Using locals as interpreters is done by all armed forces when they enter a country where a different language is spoken. When we speak to members of Parliament from different parties, they all agree that the government’s action in this case, is wrong and unjust, but they are all afraid to speak about this publicly. At this time, Mr. Oberlander's lawyer is applying for a judicial review of the decision and we hope that this will be granted.  We (the DKK) are also preparing for submitting  this case to the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva.

(Here is the reason why letters to the media and the Government are so important:We received information from highest sources in Ottawa that the Governments final decision will depend on how much public outcry there is. If there is a lot, Mr.Oberlander will probably be allowed to stay in Canada on humanitarian grounds.)

We would very much appreciate if you could do the following:
Please write letters or call  1-800 O CANADA / 1- 800 622-6232
also to Newspapers, Radio Stations, TV Stations and Members of Parliament.  Also e-mail,  fax or regular mail a copy of all letters that you write to the German-Canadian Congress:  dkkont@golden.net
